MORE INFO
Milli Mathematics is a new math book series for elementary schools in Finland by Sanoma Pro. I’ve been working as the main illustrator for all the books from 3rd to 6th grade, so 8 books in total. Each grade consists of two books, one for the Autumn and one for Spring, and each book has about 150 individual full-colour illustrations ranging from huge compositions filling a whole spread to small icon-like illustrations.
Thematically the illustrations can be divided roughly into two categories: story illustrations and mathematical illustrations. The story illustrations are there to give rhythm to the layout and bring humour and colour to the spreads, while the mathematical illustrations are made to help the students understand the mathematical concepts explained on the spread. Many illustrations play a major part in an exercise and their goal is to communicate that math is an ordinary everyday thing and this way hopefully make it less intimidating.
I’ve also been heavily involved with the creation of all the characters for the series right from the start. We’ve created a host of main characters with a bunch of supporting characters each with individual personalities. Each year the characters grow a little to keep up with the students.
